Giddy with garden

And now for something totally un-birth-related…

(I know I said a post about preventing preterm labor was up next. It is still coming. I promise.)

But I’m too excited not to share…

Off and on over the last three years, we have tried our hand at gardening in this Arizona desert. We have had varying degrees of success. It has been a while since the last attempt, however. And my green thumb was getting antsy. So I bought a bunch of seeds back at the beginning of the summer in preparation for the winter garden I was hoping to plant. Spinach, sorrel, beets, carrots, broccoli, sugar snap peas, chives, onions, some herbs, collard greens, and several varieties of kale and swiss chard.

And now our garden plot is tilled and ready for planting…

I have a feeling this is going to be our happiest garden yet.  Just look at that luscious well-tilled soil, full of yummy compost-y goodness.  Speaking of compost, decomposition is freaking cool.  It boggles my mind that this very unassuming dirt-like stuff…

…was colorful, chunky, crazy-smelling fruit and vegetable scraps just a few months ago.  I get giddy thinking of all the good soil-enriching vitamins and minerals right there.

On Monday, we plant seeds!
